My motivation for
learning Chinese is that I am gambling on Mandarin becoming an
important language in Australian schools. Learning Chinese might let
me teach again in my preferred area of teaching and learning LOTE. At
this point in time LOTE teaching jobs across Australia are rare. At the moment LOTE in Australian schools is a contentious, emotive and somewhat
political issue. So in some whys I feel I am
taking quite a risk investing in the expectation that LOTE will have
a place or be taken seriously in Australian schools again. However, I remain optimistic.
